Update on ongoing political unrest, October 9  

Location: Kyrgyz Republic 

Event:  We received reports that potentially violent clashes between supporters of rival political groups will occur this evening in the downtown areaResulting unrest could spread throughout the city, to include southern residential neighborhoods.  We also continue to receive reports that small demonstrations continue in Bishkek and several other cities throughout the Kyrgyz Republic. These demonstrations have the potential to turn violent at any time.   

President Jeenbekov declared a state of emergency for Bishkek, which is in place from October 9, 2020 at 2000 hours until October 21, 2020 at 0800 hours.  Conditions of the state of emergency are subject to change with little to no notice and may include curfew and restrictions on gatherings and movements 

U.S. Embassy employees have been instructed to shelter in place between 1800 hours to 0600 hours until further notice.  We recommend U.S. citizens stay indoors and away from windows. 

Actions to Take:   

  • Shelter in place.
  • Avoid large crowds, gatherings, and demonstrations.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and local security developments.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Monitor local media.
